Journalism and free speech trials: Week of 22-26 October

This week several peace academics and journalists, including Ziya Ataman, represented by Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) Legal Team, will appear before judges. Below is a list of this week’s journalism and free speech trials:

October 22, Monday

  • The first hearing of Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) students who are charged with “insulting the president” due to a banner they carried during their graduation ceremony in July, will be held at Ankara 11. Court of First Instance.

October 23, Tuesday

  • Hearing of academic İbrahim Kaboğlu, will be held at İstanbul 36. High Criminal Court at 11:00 AM. Kaboğlu is charged with “terrorist propaganda” due to his participation in the peace petition titled “We will not be a party to this crime” criticizing the state’s military involvement in the predominantly Kurdish populated cities. The petition was launched by Academics for Peace Initiative.

October 24, Wednesday

  • Hearing of Evrensel newspaper reporter Kemal Özer who is charged with “membership in a terrorist organization” will be held at Tunceli 1. High Criminal Court.

  • Hearing of Evrensel newspaper writer Kamil Tekin Sürek who is charged with “insulting the president” will be held at Bakırköy 2. Court of First Instance at 2:30 PM.

October 26, Friday

  • Hearing of Bilgi University academic Ferda Keskin, will be held at İstanbul 22. High Criminal Court at 10:10 AM. Keskin is charged with “terrorist propaganda” due to his participation in the peace petition titled “We will not be a party to this crime” criticizing the state’s military involvement in the predominantly Kurdish populated cities. The petition was launched by Academics for Peace Initiative.

  • Fifth hearing of journalist Ziya Ataman, represented by MLSA, will be held at Şırnak 1. High Criminal Court at 09:30 AM. Ataman is charged with “membership in a terrorist organization”.
