Journalism and free speech trials: Week of December 16
This week several journalism and freedom of expression trials will resume at courts. Below is a list of this week’s hearings:
December 17, Tuesday
  • The trial where complainant Justice and Development Party (AKP) Bursa MP Efkan Ala accuses former aktifhaber.com Editor-in-Chief Yetkin Yıldız of  “slander” and “libel” will resume before the Bakırköy 31st Criminal Court of First Instance. Evidence against Yıldız consist of news reports on tweets that are posted from the anonymous twitter account called Fuat Avni.
  • Trial where former German Green Party MP Memet Kılıç faces “insulting the President” charges will begin before Ankara 36th Criminal Court of First Instance this week. Kılıç faces this charge based on an interview he gave to online news portal ABC on July 12, 2017, which was published with the title “Charge of Genocide against Erdoğan: The Banana Republic treatment.” 
December 18, Wednesday
  • Fifth hearing of the trial where seven journalists from since-shuttered DİHA and Özgür Gündem (Ömer Çelik, A. Vahap Taş, Çağdaş Kaplan, Selman Çiçek, Hamza Gündüz, İnan Kızılkaya and Kemal Sancılı) face “identifying those who participated in anti-terror operations as a target” for sharing a news report about a gendarmerie general overseeing the Sur district of Diyarbakır province between 2015 - 2016 on their social media accounts will resume at Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court.
