Journalism and free speech trials: Week of Nov 12-16

This week several journalists will appear before judges. Below is a list of this week’s journalism and free speech trials:

November 13, Tuesday

  • In 2017, Wall Street Journal reporter Ayla Albayrak was sentenced to two years in prison ‘in absentia’, charged with ‘terrorist propaganda’ because of an article she wrote in 2015. Albayrak had appealed this sentence, now her case is brought before the Gaziantep Regional Court.

November 14, Wednesday

  • Former Zaman newspaper lead writer Ali Ünal’s hearing will be held at Uşak 2. High Criminal Court. Ünal who has been in pre-trial detention since August 2016, is charged with ‘founding and leading a terrorist organization’, ‘membership in a terrorist organization’, and ‘attempt to overthrow the constitutional order’.

November 15, Thursday

  • Hearing of the now-shuttered pro-Kurdish Dicle News Agency (DİHA) reporter Selman Keleş and journalist Arif Aslan will be held at Van 5. High Criminal Court. Journalists who were released at the first hearing after spending eight months in pre-trial detention are charged with ‘membership in a terrorist organization’.
