Court acquits journalist Gökhan Öner on "membership in a terrorist organization" charges

Denizli - The trial where since shuttered Dicle News Agency (DİHA) reporter Gökhan Öner faces “membership in a terrorist organization” and “terrorist propaganda” charges resumed at Denizli 2nd High Criminal Court today. The court announced the verdict today and acquitted Öner on membership charges but sentenced the journalist to 10 months in prison for “making terrorist propaganda.” The court ruled to defer the sentence.

While Öner did not attend today’s hearing, his lawyer Mazlum Demirbağ was present in the courtroom.

A lawsuit was filed against journalist Gökhan Öner based on an unfounded report made to the Denizli Provincial Security Directorate. DİHA reporter Gökhan Öner was taken into custody on 28 April 2018, arrested for “membership in a terrorist organization” charges, and released during the first hearing of the trial (26 July 2018) following a 3-month imprisonment.
