Journalism and free speech trials: Week of April 19
This week several journalism and freedom of expression trials will resume at courts. Below is a list of this week’s hearings:

20 April Tuesday

  • Trial where since shuttered TV10’s former cameraman Kemal Demir and staffer Kemal Karagöz face “aiding and abetting a terrorist organization without being a member” charges will be held at Istanbul 28th High Criminal Court. Demir was released from prison in the previous hearing after a detention period of over a year.
  • Second hearing of the trial where Yeni Yaşam daily Managing Editor İnci Aydın faces “making terror propaganda” charges for a news report published in the paper on July 17, 2020 with the title “Is a new attack at the door?” will be held at İstanbul 26th High Criminal Court. The concerned news report claimed that Turkish Armed Forces’ was planning a new military operation towards northern Syria, specifically to Kobane. 

22 April Thursday

  • Ninth hearing of the trial where 22 journalists who were taken into custody while the police was raiding Özgür Gündem daily’s office on 16 June 2016 are tried on charges of “resisting a public official to prevent them from performing their duty” and “libel” will be held at İstanbul 5th Criminal Court of the First Instance.
