Turkish prison bans four newspapers for 'praising terrorism'

The administration of an İzmir irison has officially banned the distribution of Evrensel, Özgürlükçü Demokrasi, Cumhuriyet and BirGün newspapers, on the grounds that these publications “praise terrorism” and they work to “separate the public along ethnic lines.”

All four newspapers are critical of the government, and they are widely regarded as independent publications.

Menemen Prison wrote in several decisions rejecting individual requests from inmates for four newspapers that they had “examined” the newspapers requested and found them to be praising terror.

Judicial appeals made against the decision were also rejected, a report published in Evrensel said.
