Week of 20 November: Trials on Journalism and Freedom of Expression

This week will also see hearings in cases related to journalism and freedom of expression. Here is the week's trial schedule:

20 November, Monday

  • 13.35 - The Büyükçekmece 16th Criminal Court of First Instance will hear the case against artist Ferhat Tunç for "insulting" former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım.

 

21 November, Tuesday                                                                                                                             

  • 10.30 - The trial filed against journalist Barış Pehlivan due to "insulting a public official" upon the complaint of Former Judges and Prosecutors' Council Member Hamit Kocabey will be held at Ankara 19th Criminal Court of First Instance.

  • 10.45 - The trial against Ramazan Yurttapan, Managing Editor of Democratic Modernity Magazine, and Haydar Ergül, magazine editor, for "insulting the President" will continue at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

 

22 November, Wednesday   

  • 09.45 - The Istanbul 29th Assize Court will hear the case against journalist Ayça Söylemez for "targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism."

 

23 November, Thursday                                                                                                                         

  •  09.50 - The trial of journalist Rüstem Batum, defended by MLSA, on the charge of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility" will continue at Istanbul's 5th Criminal Court of First Instance.
  • 09.50 - The Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance will hear the case against journalist Baransel Ağca for "insulting the President."  

 

24 November, Friday        

  • 11.00 - The Bursa 8th Criminal Court of First Instance will proceed with the trial of Ozan Kaplanoğlu, the Managing Editor of Bursa Muhalif newspaper, along with newspaper editor Hatice Nur Derya and journalist Burhan Gökay Küpeli. The three were detained during a protest they were covering for news purposes and are now facing an accusation of "violating Law No. 2911". 

  • 09.49 - Writer Gökhan Yavuzel, defended by MLSA, will appear before the judge at Şanlıurfa 4th Assize Court with the allegation of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
