Week of April 15: Journalism and freedom of expression trials

 

Throughout this week, various cases related to journalism and freedom of expression, facing various allegations, will continue to be heard.

During the week, the MLSA Trial Monitoring Unit will share updates from the hearings in Turkish and English via @MLSADavaTakip.

April 16, Tuesday

08:45 - The sixth hearing of the trial where journalist Mehmet Göcekli is being tried on charges of "making terrorist propaganda" based on his social media posts will be held at Istanbul 27th Heavy Penal Court.

09:00 - The second hearing of the trial where 26 individuals were detained for attempting to commemorate the mine disaster in Amasra, resulting in the deaths of 41 miners, on charges of "contravening Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations" will be held at Ankara 65th Criminal Court of First Instance.

09:00 - The 11th hearing of the trial where former HDP MPs Tayip Temel and Pero Dündar, among others, are being tried on charges of "establishing and leading a terrorist organization" will be held at Diyarbakır 2nd Heavy Penal Court.

09:35 - The 16th hearing of the trial where journalist Hayko Bağdat, represented by MLSA, is being tried on charges of "insulting the president" will be held at Istanbul 51st Criminal Court of First Instance.

09.55 - The retrial of the case against journalist Ayşe Kara due to "being a member of an armed terrorist organisation" will start at Diyarbakır 5th Assize Court after the case was overturned by the Court of Appeal.

10:35 - The second hearing of the trial where journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Yadigâr Aygün, Serpil Ünal, Esra Soybir, and Zeynep Kuray,  represented by MLSA,  will be held at Istanbul Anadolu 22nd Criminal Court of First Instance. They were detained while attempting to hold a press statement in Kadıköy in support of their colleagues who were detained in Diyarbakır and Ankara. They are facing charges of "participating in unlawful gatherings and marches without dispersing spontaneously despite warnings."

April 17, Wednesday

11:00 - The 17th hearing of the trial where former member of the Federal German Parliament, Mehmet Kılıç, represented by MLSA, is being tried on charges of "insulting the president" will be held at Ankara 36th Criminal Court of First Instance.

12:30 - The fifth hearing of the trial where Cihan Kolivar, President of the Bread Producers Union, is being tried on charges of "publicly insulting a segment of society based on class differences", "openly insulting the Turkish nation", and "insulting the president" will be held at Istanbul 17th Criminal Court of First Instance.

April 18, Thursday

10:20 - The trial where journalists Can Dündar and İnan Kızılkaya are being tried on charges of "insulting a public official" will be held at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

10:50 - The 31st hearing of the trial where Hüseyin Aykol, Reyhan Çapan, Hasan Başak, and Kemal Yakut, former Editor-in-Chief, Responsible Managing Editor, and columnists of the shuttered Özgür Gündem newspaper, are being tried on charges of "propaganda", "praising crime and criminals", and "incitement to crime" due to articles published about self-governance, will be held at Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court.

11:20 - The trial where Aziz Oruç and Ersin Çaksu, represented by MLSA, are being tried on charges of "publicly insulting the Republic of Turkey's security and military organization" due to articles published in Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper, will be held at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

11:35 - The third hearing of the trial where eight individuals were detained following the prohibition of a film screening organized by the Science, Aesthetics, Culture, Art Research Foundation (BEKSAV) for LGBTI+ Pride Month, on charges of "contravening Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations" will be held at Istanbul Anadolu 45th Criminal Court of First Instance.

13:50 - The trial where two separate cases against Ahmet Sever, former Chief Advisor for Media, Communication, and Public Relations to former President Abdullah Gül, on charges of "insulting a public official" and "insulting the president" due to his book "İçimde Kalmasın/Tanıklığımdır" published in 2018, will continue at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

14:25 - The fifth hearing of the trial where Ramazan Yurttapan, Responsible Managing Editor of Demokratik Modernite Magazine, and Haydar Ergül, editor of the magazine, are being tried on charges of "insulting the president" due to articles published in the 37th issue of the magazine, will be held at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

14:30 - The seventh hearing of the trial where journalist Baransel Ağca is being tried on charges of "insulting the president" will be held at Istanbul's 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance.

April 19, Friday

10:00 - The first hearing of the trial where 77 individuals, including Asena Tunca, a reporter for Birgün newspaper, will be held at Istanbul Anadolu 14th Criminal Court of First Instance. They were detained for protesting the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay) while commemorating the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. They face charges of "contravening Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations."
