Week of October 16: Trials on Journalism and Freedom of Expression

This week will also see hearings in cases related to journalism and freedom of expression. Here is the week's trial schedule:

 

Tuesday, October 17 

  • The trial against former co-chairs of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Figen Yüksekdağ, former HDP group deputy chairpersons İdris Baluken and Çağlar Demirel, and MPs Altan Tan, Ahmet Yıldırım, Ertuğrul Kürkçü, Mehmet Ali Aslan, and Saadet Becerikli will be held at Silvan Criminal Court of First Instance at 9:00 AM. They are facing charges of "resisting to prevent the execution of duty," "insulting a public officer for his duty," and "insulting the President."

  • The trial against İzel Sezer, the Editor-in-Chief of İleri Haber, and Batuhan Batan, the Managing Editor, will take place at the Istanbul 25th Criminal Court of First Instance at 10.30 am. The charges against them include "publicly insulting with an audio, written or video message" and "slander" based on the complaint of Mustafa Doğan İnal, the former lawyer of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

  • The trial of journalist Deniz Yücel, who is represented by MLSA and accused of "insulting the president" and "publicly insulting the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the State," has been scheduled to take place at the Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance at 10:50 am.

 

October 18, Wednesday

 

  • The trial of journalist Ahmet Kanbal, who is accused of "insulting a public official" based on a complaint filed by Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu, will take place on Thursday, October 19 at 10:05 am at the Mardin 1st Criminal Court of First Instance.

  • The first hearing for the case against journalist Fırat Bulut is scheduled to take place at the Elbistan 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance at 10:10 am. The charges against him are for "publicly disseminating misleading information" due to his social media posts about the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş on February 6.

  • The trial against the writer and poet Gökhan Yavuzel, who has been defended by MLSA, is due to take place at the Şanlıurfa 5th Assize Court. Yavuzel has been accused of "making propaganda for a terrorist organization" based on information from an open source research report and statements made in his book 'Sahipsiz Şiirler'.

  • The Istanbul Anatolian 10th Criminal Court of First Instance will hear the case against Semra Çelebi, the Gazete Kadıköy Editor-in-Chief, defended by MLSA for "publicly degrading the signs of state sovereignty" at 09:50.

  • The compensation lawsuit filed against Gerçek Gündem editor Furkan Karabay due to eight tweets including "There is a group in the judiciary, known as 'Pelikan'" will be held at Istanbul 1st Civil Court of First Instance at 09.55. Karabay is on trial for "unjustified attack on personal rights" due to a complaint filed by Mustafa Doğan İnal, former lawyer of President Erdoğan. 

  • The trial of Arafat Dayan, former Managing Editor of Demokratik Ulus newspaper, accused of promoting illegal organizations, will take place at the Mersin 7th Assize Court at 10:05 am.  

  • The Istanbul 25th Assize Court will hold the trial of journalists Ahmet Memiş, Ali Akkuş, Cemal Azmi Kalyoncu, Gökçe Fırat Çulhaoğlu, Ünal Tanık, Yakup Çetin, and Yetkin Yıldız for allegedly "aiding an illegal organization" at 10:10 am.

  • The trial of journalist Rüstem Batum, who is being defended by MLSA, is scheduled to take place at the Istanbul 12th Criminal Court of First Instance at 11:50 am. The charges against him are related to the alleged "insulting of the president" through his posts on Twitter (now X platform), based on a complaint filed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

  • The journalists Elif Akgül, Haluk Kalafat, and Serdar Korucu are facing a case for allegedly "publicly denigrating the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Government of the Republic of Turkey, and the judicial organs of the State." The charges stem from a series of news articles published on the Bianet news website regarding the Armenian Genocide based on a whistleblower's complaint to CIMER. The case will be held at Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance at 13.30.

 

October 20, Friday

 

  • The President of the October Bread Producers' Union, Cihan Kolivar, is facing charges of "publicly insulting a section of the public based on social class differences," "publicly insulting the Turkish nation," and "insulting the president," over comments he made during a television appearance. He had said, "Since our society is saturated with bread, such rulers have been in charge for 20 years." The case will be heard at the Istanbul 17th Criminal Court of First Instance at 1:30 pm.
