Journalist Ali Çağatay was released at a hearing in the case in which he had been held in pretrial detention over a social media post about the abduction of Erhan Karaal, deputy general manager of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Culture Inc. The prosecutor requested that Çağatay remain in custody, but the court ordered his release, taking into account the time he had already spent in detention.

At the hearing before the Istanbul 5th Criminal Court of First Instance, the prosecutor requested that Çağatay remain in custody. The court, however, ordered his release, taking into account the length of time he had already spent in detention.
Çağatay was arrested on June 26
Çağatay was detained on June 25 on charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “insulting state institutions and organs” over a social media post about the abduction and torture of Erhan Karaal outside his home.
Çağatay was arrested on June 26. After spending four days in Metris Prison, he was transferred to the No. 1 L-Type Prison at the Marmara Closed Penal Institution in Silivri.
The case was filed over Çağatay’s social media post concerning allegations that Erhan Karaal had been abducted and tortured. Çağatay was charged with “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “insulting state institutions and organs.”
Çağatay was released at today’s hearing after spending about two and a half months in pretrial detention.
