Journalist Kanbal’s hearing adjourned until March 19


Sevda Aydın, İzmir – Journalist Ahmet Kanbal’s trial, in which Kanbal stands accused of “spreading terrorist propaganda in a sequence”, resumed at İzmir 2. High Criminal Court today.

The pro-Kurdish Mesopotamia News Agency (MA) reporter Kanbal joined his hearing via the prison video link, SEGBİS, from Mardin where he resides, alongside his lawyer Erdal Kuzu. The indictment against Kanbal was prepared by the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and involves 31 news stories he penned regarding the Turkish Army’s military operation in Syria’s Afrin, and his social media posts.

The prosecutor requested the punishment of Kanbal on “spreading terrorist propaganda in a sequence via the press” and asked Kanbal to be sentenced to nine years in prison. 9 yıl hapis cezası verilmesini istedi.

Kanbal defended his news reports and social media posts during the hearing, noting he has embraced “peace journalism” as a fundamental principle he said that journalism cannot be considered as a crime. Kanbal’s lawyer Erdal Kuzu requested extra time to prepare a written defense statement. Hearing was adjourned until 19 March.
