Prosecutor demands 15 years for journalist Çağdaş Kaplan

A Turkish prosecutor has asked for up to 15 years for Çağdaş Kaplan, an editor with the independent news website Gazete Karınca

In a hearing heard on 3 April by the Sakarya 2nd High Criminal Court, the prosecutor asked for Kaplan to be punished on charges of "membership in a terrorist organization," punishable by 7.5 to 15 years in prison.

The charges relate to a news report published in 2010 by the shuttered pro-Kurdish Dicle News Agency DİHA which reported on discrimination towards Kurdish students attending university in Sakarya, a province located on the Black Sea coast of Turkey.

The next hearing in the trial will be heard on 31 May, when a verdict is expected.

In 2010, Kaplan was detained for four days for reporting on the alleged racism endured by Kurdish students in Sakarya.
